About Khokhan Wildlife Sanctuary

Located at a distance of 19 km from the heart of Kullu Town, Khokhan Wildlife Sanctuary is the home to varieties of mammals and reptiles. The major attraction of this sanctuary is the Himalayan Black Bear which is listed as an endangered species. The total area of this sanctuary is 14.2 sq km and this forest area has been notified as a sanctuary area in the year 1954 as per the Wildlife Protection Act Punjab. As it is not very far from Kuillu Town, visitors who come to this sanctuary area can also arrange for local sightseeing tours and enjoy different adventurous activities. This sanctuary joins the Nagru Wildlife Sanctuary in its south-west part.

The sanctuary receives average rainfall of 850 mm during monsoons. During the winter months, average snowfall of this sanctuary area is 330 mm. Bhuntar is the nearest town of Khokhan Wildlife Sanctuary. The average altitude of this sanctuary ranges from 1500 to 2800 m. During summers the maximum temperature is about 28°C and during winters the mercury dips down to -5°C.

Varieties of mammals are seen in this wildlife sanctuary and the prime attraction is the Himalayan Tahr and the Himalayan Black Bear. The other species of mammals found in this sanctuary are Barking Deer, Leopard, Musk Deer, Wolf, Blue Sheep, Indian Giant Squirrel, Musk Deer etc.  The birds found in this sanctuary are Monal, Khaleej, duck, hornbill, stripped parrots and pheasants of various types.

The flora of this wildlife sanctuary consist of the Oak, Deodar, Fir, Chir and the common plants and herbs found in the higher altitude areas.

Raghunath Temple

A temple built in 1660 by the king Jagat Singh is located only 7 km away from this sanctuary.

Sultanpur Palace

The residential place of the royal family of Kullu is also is also located near the sanctuary and must be visited for its wonderful collection of Pahari Miniature Paintings.

How to reach Khokhan Wildlife Sanctuary

Khokhan is well connected through all transport means. The best way to reach Khokhan from most of the north India is through road services. Buses ply to Kullu from various other places of Himachal Pradesh as well as from the other adjoining states. AC, non-AC, Deluxe, semi-deluxe are the different types of buses one could get from places like Delhi, Pathankot, Shimla, Chandigarh etc. to reach Kullu. Hiring of taxis is also available.

To reach Khokhan, rail services are up to Jogindernagar. It is the nearest railway station to Kullu located about 120 km from Kullu. Travelers could also take train up to Shimla or Chandigarh then take bus or hire taxi to reach this sanctuary. To reach Khokhan by air, the nearest airport is Bhuntar located about 10 km away from Kullu. The best time to visit Khokhan Sanctuary is from October to March.
