About Tirthan Wildlife SanctuaryThough there are other wildlife sanctuaries in Kullu but there is something special about the Tirthan Wildlife Sanctuary. Located at a height of 5000 feet and overlooking River Tirthan, this beautiful wildlife sanctuary is one of the most amazing places of Himachal Pradesh. This sanctuary is connected to the famous national park of this area, the Great Himalayan National Park.
Apart from giving opportunity to watch diverse species of animals and plants, visitors get mesmerized with the views of snow-clad mountains and the greenery around. Orchards of apple and pear are also seen in the surrounding places. Tirthan Wildlife Sanctuary is part of Seraj Forest Division. About 61 square kilometers of the forest area has been declared as a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1976. There are many trekking sites and pilgrimage spots around for the visitors of this sanctuary.

Hot springs Mantalai Rakti Sar, Hans Kund and Khirganga are the hot springs of this area where pilgrims come from all over the country come and take bath. The water of these springs has therapeutic values. Shringa Rishi Temple is another popular tourist place of this area. Flora and Fauna of Tirthan SanctuaryLocated at an altitude of 2100 to 4900 m, this wildlife sanctuary has forest type ranging from temperate deciduous to the Alpine ones. The trees common to this region are Oak and Deodar trees. Varieties of mammals and birds find this sanctuary as their home. The sanctuary was declared as a protected area for preservation of the Himalayan Tahr. The maximum number of Himalayan Tahr is found in this sanctuary.
The other animals found here are the Himalayan Brown Bear, Leopard, Weasel, Musk Deer, Barking Deer, Wild Cat, Rhesus, Indian Fox etc.
How to Reach Tirthan Wildlife SanctuaryWhile going from Kullu Town to Banjar, one could get this sanctuary on the way. The best way to reach there is by road. Buses are there but the most comfortable and affordable journey can be enjoyed by hiring taxi or cab. Private vehicles are also used by the visitors who come from nearby areas or adjoining states.
The nearest rail station is Jogindernagar which connects Kullu Town to the rest of India. Other railway stations from where one could reach Kullu by road are Shimla and Chandigarh stations. Direct buses and taxis are available to reach Kullu.
For the travelers who prefer to take airways, the nearest airport is the Bhuntar airport at a distance of 10 km from Kullu. The best time to visit this sanctuary is the summer months as weather remains pleasant. Monsoons should be avoided as the annual rainfall received in this sanctuary is about 1500 mm. Winter months are chilly and at times the temperature becomes -5°C.
